Group Says NBC Pulls Its Ad Questioning McCain Over Medical History
A progressive organization is seeking supporters to pressure the NBC television network to put an advertisement back on the air that questions Republican nominee John McCain over McCain's medical history.
NBC pulled the ad, including from its MSNBC cable news outlet, after conservative commentators Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh lambasted Democracy for America (DFA) and Brave New PAC for running a TV advertisement that asks why McCain is keeping his health records private, DFA says in an email to supporters.
O'Reilly calls it "the most vicious political ad of the campaign," while Limbaugh says, "These people will stop at nothing," according to DFA.
"O'Reilly, running scared, went on to attack MSNBC and their network executives for allowing the ad to air in the first place. Shortly after, NBC informed us that they were pulling the ad," says the email, from Charles Chamberlain, political director at DFA. "Evidently, O'Reilly is now calling the shots at NBC. Bill O'Reilly shouldn't get to choose what you can watch on television. Call NBC right now and tell them to run the ad."
The McCain health ad is DFA's second thus far of the current campaign season. The DFA ads are among just a handful of independent TV ads in the 2008 presidential campaign given Democratic nominee Barack Obama's desire to control most of the TV message this year.
Asking McCain to fully open his medical records is "fair and legitimate," Chamberlain says. "The fact that Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly are on the attack is proof they don't want to know the truth," he adds.
An earlier email, from Rachel Moss, DFA finance director, acknowledged the McCain medical ad as "aggressive."
"He's 72. He has had 4 bouts of cancer. Earlier this year the McCain campaign made a portion of his medical records available to a select group of journalists," the email from Moss says. "But there were strings attached. These hand-picked reporters had only 3 hours to reviews over 50,000 pages of documents. Absolutely no electronic equipment was allowed in the room. So no cell phones, no computers, and no copiers. What is John McCain hiding?"
The email from Moss was the first solicitation for funds to pay to air the 30-second TV spot.
Democratic Sens. Harry Reid of Nevada, Charles Schumer of New York, and Claire McCaskill of Missouri have joined more than 2,000 doctors calling for full disclosure of McCain's health records, DFA says.
