Republicans Claim Biden Nomination Gaffe; Restart Clock

Republicans pounced on an apparent gaffe Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware made during his formal acceptance of the 2008 Democratic vice presidential nomination. The Republicans re-started the Biden "gaffe clock" they've been running on the Republican National Committee (RNC) website.

The RNC first started the Biden gaffe clock shortly after Barack Obama publicly named Biden as his running mate. A loquacious speaker, Biden is criticized for his gaffes.

In a statement, Republicans cite the Washington newspaper, The Hill, regarding the slip Biden reportedly made in his acceptance speech in Denver. Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Biden mixed up military "battalions" with "brigades." (The mistake was apparently fixed later in the official transcript of Biden's speech released by Democratic convention officials.)
When he made the apparent misstatement, Biden was defending Obama's foreign policy views.

"Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden might be the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, but for at least a split second Wednesday, he got confused about some very simple military terminology," The Hill reports. "Speaking at the Democratic National Convention about Sen. Barack Obama's foreign policy judgment, Biden stated that Obama has advocated for two additional battalions in Afghanistan. In fact, Obama called for two extra brigades -- a small verbal slip, but a significant numerical one. A brigade is composed of a varying number of battalions. For the GOP, it is sure to be fodder for their efforts to label Biden a gaffe machine."

Biden spoke on a night Democrats were emphasizing their national security and military credentials. Biden's fellow senators, as well as retired military personnel, had spoken in support of Democrats' support for the military and Obama's defense policies.

The Democrats' convention ends tonight after Obama formally accepts the 2008 Democratic nomination at Denver's outdoor football stadium.

Republicans say that Biden's reported mistake in military terminology comes only four days, 17 hours, and 59 minutes since his last gaffe, which the GOP claims Biden made shortly after beginning his vice presidential bid.
