Current, Former Armed Services Chairs Win Award
A current and a former chair of congressional military committees have won the 2007 American Patriot Award.
The National Defense University Foundation, celebrating its 25th Anniversary, presented the award to Sen. John Warner (R-Va.) and Rep. Ike Skelton (D-Mo.). Warner chaired the Senate Armed Services Committee prior to the Democratic takeover of Congress this year, while Skelton ascended to the chairman's seat this year of the House Armed Services Committee in the same Capitol Hill switch of power.
The award was given at a ceremony in Washington, attended by Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and other notables.
"We are very pleased that the 2007 American Patriot Award is being presented to two of the nation's finest patriots -- Senator John Warner and Congressman Ike Skelton," says retired Maj. Gen. Charles Link, president and CEO, National Defense University
Foundation. "Senator Warner, as a Navy sailor, United States Marine Corps officer, Secretary of the Navy, and United States Senator from Virginia, and Congressman Ike Skelton as a State Legislator, Military Historian, and United States Representative from Missouri have served our nation with uncommon fervor and devotion. Their more than 80 years of unparalleled public service truly represent a special kind of American patriotism deserving of special recognition."
