Draft Gore Campaign Delivers Petition to Fmr. VP's Office

A campaign to draft Al Gore into the 2008 presidential contest has delivered a petition to the former vice president's office in Nashville, Tenn. Organizers say the petition contains 100,000 signatures.

Gore, who lost to President Bush in 2000 by just 537 votes in the hotly contested Florida balloting, has given no indication he plans to run for the 2008 Democratic nomination. If he were to run, Gore would face off against the wife of his former boss, Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York. Clinton is a frontrunner for the nomination.

Still, Gore still scores high in polls which include him as a potential candidate.

Gore's growing popularity is demonstrated by a recent poll in early primary state New Hampshire, showing Gore running well ahead of the entire Democratic field, leading Hillary Clinton by six points, 32% to 26%, according to the Draft Gore organization.

"This enormous outpouring of support for Al Gore is testimony both to his enduring appeal among the grassroots and to the dissatisfaction of theDemocratic base with the current crop of declared candidates," says Monica Friedlander, chair of Draft Gore.

The Draft Gore petition included space for personal comments and the Draft Gore released some, including this one from Ernesto Meruelo, of San Diego, Calif.: "Mr Gore, I'm a 13-year military vet who has served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Having always voted Republican, I bear responsibility for our current government. I thank you for your 30+ yrs of service and am asking you to serve again."
